Is "House in a Box" (trademark) a prefab / modular built house?

Answer: 

Absolutely not! Although the purchase of a House in a Box is almost as simple as buying a prefab/modular home, when completed it is no different than a custom designed home. 

We deliver the materials for the model, created and chosen by you, to be constructed on-site, by either yourself or by contracting our exclusive supplier (84 Lumber) to complete your home. 

Specific models may have roof trusses which are manufactured in a controlled environment and, if chosen, typical floor systems comprised of pre-manufactured joists (TJI or similar) in lieu of dimensional lumber. HIAB designed our product to comply with the 2009 International Residential Code as well as the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code. 

Using the materials we make available and building techniques employed merely simplifies the process of building your own custom home.

"Hunting for a new house? Soon, you can yank one right out of a machine.
A pair of Danish architects partnered with Facit homes, a London-based digital fabrication and architecture specialist, to construct a two-bedroom house out of parts produced in a rapid-prototyping machine. The 1,250-square-foot Villa Asserbo--named for the small Danish town 50 kilometers outside of Copenhagen, where the house sits--was built from 400 Forest Stewardship Council-certified Nordic plywood components designed in digital software, fabricated using a CNC miller, then snapped together (each part came with a number for easy assembly). All told, the house took just six weeks to build and cost $300,000."

IKEA Pre-fab Modern Home

"Swedish furniture company IKEA, has collaborated with Oregon architectural firm Ideabox, to launch its first line of prefabricated houses in the U.S., named the “Aktiv.” The IKEA-themed dwelling is a one-bedroom home centered around space-saving furniture and products. The hip and modern house was outfitted taking into consideration the demands from Pacific-Northwest homeowners, and is designed to be eco-friendly. It is equipped with facilities such as a dual-flush toilet and energy-star electronics. A combination of fiber-cement siding, corrugated metal, and a standing-seam metal roof make up the exterior of this all-in-one home.

According to Jim Russell, president of Ideabox, the complete home “brings all the fun and design of Ideabox houses together with all the function, design, and personality of IKEA.” The home will be furnished with a complete IKEA package that includes Tundra maple flooring, Pax wardrobes, and Abstrakt cabinets.  Ideabox and IKEA are now displaying the model house at the Portland Home & Garden Show. The Aktiv, Swedish for active, is expected to be priced at US$79,500."
